What a joy this one was to paint! I think it's safe to say that the 2025 Superb Owl was a turning point in my acrylics practice toward looser, more colorful work and I'm really delighted with the result.
The Northern Saw Whet owl is a natural cutiepie, who I've wanted to do for years, but honestly I was intimidated by the small scale. I knew I'd be working small this year, and the Smithsonian had named her their pick for the SuperbOwl so I decided this year was the year. These birds are very small and agile, and weigh no more than a bar of soap. They have particularly expressive faces because of the proportions of their owl-eyes to the rest of their heads, and always look to me a little bit like they want to fight.
The original is an 8x10 acrylic on gesso board, and was commissioned in advance by a patron (who, sadly, was rooting for the Chiefs, and the Eagles absolutely trounced them, but she was a good sport about it!). Proceeds from the sale of these prints in February 2025 will be going toward the Superb Owl donation to the Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center in honor of the Eagles win!
Every February, all owl art contributes to the donation for that year's Superb Owl winner.
